Fair play, it was an experience :p
Don't worry about the boats. Not the first time they've fallen off a roof, definatly won't be the last.Diarmaid_Moloney wrote:Got my money back for them shit roof racks today. Sorry about the Boats.

Now to source better roof racks and a Camera.
O the Blue Cons left in the house are mine.
The red strap i'm sure is a club one.

...so just to outline how the week went down for anyone who wasn't there. I think all the day activities are right but I might have mixed up the order of some of the nights, there was a lot of paddling, lot of driving and very little sleeping done so my memory of everything could be a little off!
Saturday: Myself, Sam, Diarmuid and Cormac left from Limerick. After brief roof-rack troubles and a flying visit from the Gardai we got to Kerry and had a sweet run on the Upper Carragh. On the way a local had a great laugh at Sam kayaking in a puddle on his driveway. The educational aspect of the trip started with Sam learning how to chop onions and peppers, and Cormac learned the difference between electric and open fires... That evening we visited the house across the road and introduced ourselves to the UCD crew, who had brought down 40 people spread between three houses.
Sunday: Water levels are low and dropping but Peter O'Sullivan told us about a river called the Comeragh which is bog fed and holds water longer than most others in the area. It's a good drive away but it turns out to be a nice run with a surprising amount on it. It's super tight, narrow and continous though and full of trees so wouldn't be ideal with a group of more than four or five. Can't remember what we did that evening? Probably went drinking with UCD again? I think this might have been the night that NUIG called in and 'borrowed' my heat gun and beer?
Monday: We thought Cathal, Jack and Stephen would arrive earlier than they did so we waited for them before going paddling. In the end they only arrived that evening so there was no boating done that day. I think we ended up in the pub that evening with UCC, NUIG, UCD and the Scottish crew.
Tuesday: Still pretty much no water around so we head towards Finian's Bay for some surf. It's big and windy and pretty hard work but still good craic. Two guys were there taking photos, they got some good ones of the lads which they put online. They also told us about a drop under a bridge out towards Kenmare which we went out to have a look at. Really cool drive, great views, found some awesome potential surf spots and found a sweet looking drop under a bridge which is definatly runnable with a bit more water. That night we entered the annual UCD pub quiz, Cathal's bottomless pit of knowlege about virtually everything got us to 4th place but were beaten by a few teams royally abusing wikipedia. Luke, Gav, Caoimhe, Louize and Aisling showed up half way through to help out. On the way home from the quiz it started to piss rain. Happy days! (edit: I think this was the night that a 50kg blond first year from U4C came back to ours and ended up beating the shite out of Cormac!)
Wednesday: Since there had been a bit of rain the night before we decided to head to the Flesk to see if there was any water around. We got there to find it totally dry, not a drop of water around. We drive 10 minutes to the Roughty and it's too high. Aaargh, I hate trying to organise kayaking shite in Ireland! We ended up heading back to where we had come from and the Upper Carragh. We had a nice high water run on it, some swims, some drama but all good at the end of the day. Havn't a notion what we did that night, was that the night of the lock-in in the 'other' pub? Somewhere around this time Borris, Gemma, Dan and Richard showed up and we had our biggest group of the week.
Thursday: Since it had pissed rain for about 24 hours, we decided to go for a bit of a mission. We hooked up with the NUIG crew and headed for the Gearhamean in the Black Valley. It's a really cool drive over a mountain pass, which was all done in the pissing rain. We got there to find water levels high, not ideal for guiding beginners down a river we don't know so we called it a run for experienced people only. That was the right decision on the day but I'd be happy to bring anyone with half decent paddling skills down it now that I know the river. Myself, Gav, Luke, Caoimhe and Jack ran it with a big group of NUIG heads. Really proud of how the lads worked on the water, stylish paddling, solid rescue skills, great representation of paddling in UL. I think this was New Years eve? Which turned into a big naked mosh pit in one of the pubs that night. Great craic! We ended up playing cards against humanity at our house till about 5 in the morning with a few UCD heads. How bad!
Friday: Since the day before only a few people had been on the water we decided to head to the Lower Carragh so that everyone could go kayaking. We spent a good while working on paddling skills, rope skills and boat rescue skills. Really productive day, I hope everyone enjoyed it! At this stage I think everyone was pretty broken after the week's kayaking, drinking and travelling so we took it pretty easy that night. We played a sharknado drinking game in the Scottish house and then went back to our own house to discuss the scandal from the night before...
Saturday: The race that was meant to be held on the Flesk the previous week was moved to the 3rd. Water levels were huge so the course had to be changed to just the first two hundred metres of the river. Myself, Jack and Andrew entered from UL and myself and Andrew took joint first place, not bad going!
I think they're all the main highlights of the week, has anyone got anything else to add?!

Was a great week indeed
Great review although I was reading through waiting for the bit where you would mention me getting absolutely bate by the 5ft blonde girl from U4C (Ucccc). I'm actually lucky I didn't get a concusion after receiving a major blow to the face.
So ya very educational, learned how to open a bottle off another bottle, flick bottle caps, roll a fag, sleep about 4 or 5 hours then go kayaking and same again for a week.
Thanks everyone for the class week, can't wait for next year, and looking forward to Wales

Now that was a pretty damn fine Kayaker's New Years!
Many thanks to everyone that came down and took part - it just wouldn't have happened without you all! Great to see the numbers that turned up. Already looking forwards to the next Kayaker's New Years!
Social highlights?
Added bonus - the agents would look forwards to having our group down again next year, and we should have no issues booking as the club.

Social highlights?
- That bottle of Southern Comfort disappearing, along with the one that drank it, only to return a little like Lazarus later on, nearly via a window or two..
- Seeing someone get beaten up by a little blonde girl in the sitting room - and she was ticklish!
- Alcool!!! The everlasting bottle. Feeding everyone over a few night and there is still some left.
- Table bouldering, and resultant bruises.
- Pressups and chins used as brakes!
- Roofrack failures, and having to come back down to pick up the boats later in the week..
- Unstrapping of boats, and upending of mincepies, borrowing of heatguns, facepainting with soot, handheld fireworks..
- People doing their bits for interclub relations..
- Eating well!
- This week being the most educational week ever for some people, learning how to open an onion, how to roll a cigarette, how to drink strong drink, and how to purloin a snowflake from another group!
- Leaving pots behind.. (sorry! - will collect them again..)
- Getting on well enough as a group with 18 tired people overcrowding the house..
Added bonus - the agents would look forwards to having our group down again next year, and we should have no issues booking as the club.

I've collected the 4 boats and gear that we had to leave behind in Killorglin.
I'll need a hand Thursday lunchtime to take them off the roof and put away, if there is anyone around please let me know!

Pots collected from Kerry. One blue pot with a lid, one dark coloured pot without lid, and a deep frying pan.
I'll drop them to the BH when I get back to Limerick, probably tomorrow Thursday..
Typed on a handheld screen.
