Level 3 Kayak Skills

General aims
The Level 3 Kayaking Skills Award aims to enable participants to:
Kayak safely and competently on rivers up to and including Grade II rivers as a member of a group of peers.
Be capable of negotiating obstacles likely to be encountered on Grade II rivers.
Assist in rescues.

Requirements
Participants must successfully explain and demonstrate the techniques and skills at a level higher than that required for the Level 2

Id love to do my level 3 this year but I dont think Id be ready for it yet!! Maybe by the end of the semester Id be more ready!! Depends on when you are organising it for :)

Well my roll is iffy! I haven't had much time on a river. Just some of the skills I dont think I have them down yet!

Ah right just so you know you are only asked to roll once, but it's better to be fully confident before going for it rather than just getting it for the sake of it

I highly recommend for people to look at the skills that you are assessed on in a level 3 assessment and make sure you are capable of doing them before committing to doing an assessment.

Strokes
Forward Paddle, Reverse Paddle, Emergency Stop.
Forward Sweep, Reverse Sweep and a combination of Forward and Reverse Sweep.
Draw Stroke
Sculling Draw
Hanging Draw
Low Brace
High Brace
Sculling for Support
Stern Rudder
Bow Rudder

Techniques
Entry and Exit
Edging
Forward Ferry Gliding
Reverse Ferry Gliding
Breaking In
Breaking Out

Rescues
Capsize Drill
Offensive & Defensive Swimming
Assisted X Rescue and an X Rescue
Eskimo Rescue
Eskimo Roll

Theory
Knowledge of Safety Rules
An understanding of Eddies, Standing Waves, Upstream & Downstream V’s, Stoppers, and Easy River Routes
An understanding of river signals and commands.

Also guys if ye are unsure about any of the skills be sure to ask one of the people who have a level 3 and they'll be happy to help you out!
Even if it is only the theory it's important to have it right in your head so that it's second nature when you need it so you can be able paddle independently and make decisions without being told what to do in a given situation.
What I mean by that is that on castleconnell you should try different things to challenge yourself, but have a look and make sure they aren't dangerous! rather than just charging down the middle each time because it is easy and you have done it before. The more you change the more you'll get out of the trips you go on
