Well lads, doing a bit of rope training on Monday night in the boathouse for anyone interested, good practice for any more advanced people who have gotten a bit rusty (like myself) or for beginners who want to learn something new skills, will be doing rope throwing, recoils and how to set up a Z drag for unpinning boats. Might do some throwing competitions at the end as well. Make it a fun evening and get pizza and stuff as well.

Thanks for organising a great night Shane. Could you throw up a diagram of a Z-drag so that those here can visualise it?

For those that were and weren't at the Ropes night, here are animations of the knots we went through and one or two that we didn't but are also very useful.

Firstly as kayakers its important for us to know which knots can and cannot be released when under tension.

Secondly keep in mind as a rule of thumb, when you put a knot in a rope you roughly HALF its breaking strength.

Thirdly; learning rope and knot terminology will help e.g. A loop, a bend (joins two ropes), a bight, a turn (a full 360° around an object with a rope) , a hitch, a stopper, standing end (the bit of rope that hangs dead when you tie a knot), the working end (the bit of rope you use to tie a knot with).


ROUND TURN & TWO HALF HITCHES
One of my favourite knots. Used to tie to or around objects, releasable under tension & stable in vibration. (for larger loads add more turns). A strong knot as the turns take the load without weakening the rope and the hitches secure the turns from releasing:

A large easy to untie after loading stopper knot. Probably one of the most versatile knots in terms of making bends and loops that are all easy to untie after loading:

SHEET BEND
For joining ropes of the same or different diameter, note that the bight must be made with the rope of larger diameter. A double sheet bend can be used to join two ropes who's diameters vary greatly. Note this is a variation on a Reef knot but is much more stable in vibration (you tie your laces with a reef knot with slip knot working ends).

BOWLINE
A useful quick loop, a note of caution NOT releasable under tension & not stable in vibration [liable to shake loose/untie after repeated loadings] only use this where you know you won't have to untie it when loaded. If you are looking for a loop that can't be untied under tension and that is stable in vibration, I'd recommend a Round Turn & Two Half Hitches or a Water Bowline:
