Design of Kayak Playspot

Hey Guys,

The company I'm working for has been approached to prepare a design guide for a playspot by the Clonmel Canoe club. From the brief chat I had with my boss, I think Clonmel want to create a playspot similar to that of Tuam. It will be very much a natural low cost feature, where a number of boulders are placed in the river, and the flow over them creates the feature. Clonmel Canoe club are trying to determine what size boulders are required, what flow will be needed, what the drop will be, suitable locations, ecological issues, planning, etc. My company will be footing the bill with the hope that the design guide can be used again.

For the time being, I would be interested in knowing if anyone has looked at this before or know of any playspots that have been 'designed'.

Thanks

There was a thread here a few months back about 1 that had been built abroad somewhere. I can't search on my phone but you should be able to find it.

The newest and supposedly one of the best playspots in Europe now is in Graz in Austria.

That's the one the other thread was about. It's built between lock gates I think. There are videos somewhere of the design and build of it from start to finish but I can't find them. It looks great though.

Go to Tuam measure the cross sectional area at the top and bottom of the feature calculate the gradient and the flow rate. Build the new feature with similar gradient and velocity. adjust the new features width to match the velocity of the Tuam hole at its ideal velocity.
I had to down a good few hydraulic surveys of rivers back in the college civil engineering days

Check out the spot in Millau, France for what's possible on a small river. Change in Height and flow rate are your key variables. Any chance you need someone to consult on the project?! Comes with experience of maths and kayaking, pay negotiable...

Yeah I'm a smartphone wanker now!

Thanks for the replies guys. I found that old thread that gives plenty of detail.

Benny Cullen has done an early design for the feature and a slalom course. This will be the route. https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewe ... p6dNCqbMVs

Arup are looking for Mech Engineers if you really want to work on this Keyes :P
