Hello dudes and dudettes,
Wanted to open a discussion thread with regards to the purchase of a new boat.
I was thinking along the lines of jackson vs. Lettman vs. Liquidlogic (stomper) vs. Dagger(mamba) vs. Waka. I've paddled Zet and know enough about that.
Id like to have peoples opinions on a best boat for Alpine purpose, considering a cost vs. Function factor in mind.
Paddler weight: currently 70kg

Working life has a way of creeping up on you!!!
If you go over 85kg though then you are a pig!!!
Think 10%-15% gain

Karnalli Lad.. My god.. What a brilliant boat!
Eyjafjallajökull Eyjafjallajökull consists of a volcano completely covered by an ice cap. The ice cap covers an area of about 100 square kilometres (39 sq mi), feeding many outlet glaciers. The main outlet glaciers are to the north; Gígjökull,

I'd suggest Stomper. Boofs like a machine, forgiving and still carves a bit. If you want something faster, carvier but less forgiving then Exo XT

That exo boat can behave oddly at high tilt angles with the channel behind the cockpit. Ask Keyes about that!

Ive been in a lot of different boatsthis season. Bar the obvious statement that its all about the pilot over the boat.
These are my short impressions of the boats ive paddled:
MK III burn feels great, fast and carves very nicely, big improvement on the old burns. Very light, hopefully this has no bearing on the quality of the plastic.
JK Karma is nice, fast and light, really good design in my opinion. It also has this great feature where it seems to pick up speed very quickly. Don't like the outfitting despite its simplicity, too flimsy.
Mamba is a very nice boat especially with the contour outfitting, very stable, easy to manoevre, easy to boof even with no speed if I was to change anything it'd be to make the hull a bit more streamlined and faster for racing. Nomad: Same design for over 10 years and still a top seller, says it all really. Ideal boat for steep rocky rivers. They are heavier then other boats on the market but seem pretty robust, Ive not seen many on the operating table.
Ive only been in a stomper a couple of times, feels ok, but the hull is notoriously weak (bit like the jefe). The remix is an unbelievably fun and fast boat. Not sure about space for gear and stuff, but if your looking a good time get in this boat. REMIX REMIX REMIX
Waka definitely rides high over holes which is nice and it feels fast in the middle of rapids, I was constantly fighting it to go in a straight line in G2/G3 water though.
Recon... very slow and heavy boat, that said, its extremely stable and will get you through any hole upright.
Lettman: No opinion, havent paddled one.
Prices of them new are all pretty similar to be fair, and so are many of the designs.
For the Alps all I'll say is I'd prefer a bigger boat mainly because of the gear you'll have in the back. Its a shit feeling to have an overloaded creek boat.

If you plug through a hole while on a slight edge the contours at the side of the cockpit can grab water and direct it up over the back deck, which pulls the rail down deeper into the water. It can be quite agressive occasionally, if you're unlucky enough to go through the right (wrong?) hole with the wrong amount of edge.Conor_B wrote:EoinK, how do you find the Exo when the boat is at a high tilt? Can it behave oddly?
Easy solution = boof feckin everything! While the boat's on the surface it handles great. I'm looking forward to getting it out on some solid rivers over in the Alps and really getting a feel for it. I've nearly forgotten what it's like to paddle now it's been so long!
